Wild March

Wild Spirit is a gathering of people looking for something out in the open. We meet on the first Saturday of every month at a different location at 10am, seeking to recognise the sacred in the natural world. We talk, take time breathe in where we are and understand the place, share thoughts, do something in reaction to what we find, and share any food and drink we bring, There is no membership and no expectation of you beyond being with us for an hour. Many involved are or have been in the past part of a Christian tradition, but others come from other paths and all are welcome.

This comes from Bob, who will facilitate for us at the next gathering.

Wild March will be at 10:00 on Saturday 3rd March in Cherry Gardens woods above Old Town, Eastbourne. The access point to the Downs is by the number 55 bus stop at the junction of Cherry Garden Road and Peppercombe Road. The nearest house, for satnav purposes, is 80 Peppercombe Road BN20 8JN.

Here is a poem Bob wrote about his experience of the woods as a boy.

Wild woods, self planted, edge of town.
Land not valued for building or farming,
But by walkers, runners, parents, children, dogs.
Soft mud underfoot – watch out for dogs.

Old trees, young trees arch randomly over the path,
Ash and beech, trees of the chalky downs,
Black spot sycamore, key bunches hanging, ready to fly,
But the air is still, and so am I.

Dry leaves rustle in the treetops and underfoot,
Small birds sing, no need to name them,
A patch of light on tree bark where the sun shines through,
And my mind is filled with light and shade and wonder.

Breathe
Step
Feel
Hear
See.

Be.

Remember.

Woods where I used to play as a boy,
Walking, running, climbing, falling,
Grazed knees and muddied clothes,
Make sure you’re home for teatime.

And once, in a late Spring afternoon,
Full of hormones and teenage doubts,
Seeking for truth, seeking for You,
Cried out in the woods, Where Are You?

And turning the path, You met me,
In a blaze of sunlight and welcoming love.
No words, no theology, just a warm embrace,
And my life changed forever.
